‘Barn Island Sunset’ captures the saturated color of the sunset sky reflecting on the marsh and water.  I started this painting en plein air on a chilly November afternoon.  Barn Island Management Area is a beautiful hiking spot just south of the Rhode Island border in Connecticut.  The marsh and bay extend to the horizon line of the tree lined offshore barrier island.  I wanted to include the reflections on the water and patiently blocked in the marsh and barrier island while I waited for the tide to rise and cover the muddy flats. The sun was setting as I finished up the water and quickly captured a few notes of color from the sky.
