There is no substitute for being at the beach. Narragansett Town Beach is one of my favorite local plein air painting destinations, especially in the off season when there are no crowds. The only sounds are of the waves crashing and washing up onto the shore and the gulls calling. A short walk along the beach takes your from surfers, to sunbathers, to fishermen and boaters braving the strong tidal waters of the Narrow River Inlet.

Continuing to walk farther north past the private Dunes Club, the beach ends bending to the inlet of the Pettaquamscutt River. At this end, the sand dunes and beach grass protect the beach houses along this slender strip of land. The seasonal sand bar at the Narrows is the perfect landing spot for small boats, kayaks and paddle boards.
In the summer months, I like to paint in late afternoon/early evening when there is plenty of parking and the beach has stopped charging for entry. This leaves plenty of time to walk the beach and paint in the beautiful late afternoon sun.
While the summer months of July and August are certainly the busiest time of the year, my favorite time to walk at Narragansett beach is during the off-season, when dogs and their humans can roam freely on the sandy beaches. We love to walk our dogs on the beach and capture sunset views of this wonderful place.
