Finally... an in-person workshop!!!
I signed up for a marine painting workshop after watching Don Demer’s demo during Plein Air Live. I have desperately wanted to improve my seascape painting skills and his demo floored me – what an experienced artist can accomplish in one hour is amazing.
And that is how I found myself at the Chatham Creative Arts Center for a week in June. What an amazing week with an outgoing, smart group of artists all wanting to improve our skills. Don was so generous sharing his knowledge and providing constructive guidance to improve our skills. An amazing week!
Cow Yard Lane Beach
White sands, turquoise waters, and a bank of offshore sand dunes – a quintessential Cape Cod scene. This beautiful. little spot was popular with dog walkers so we had lots of adorable four-legged company. After watching Don complete a stunning demo, we painted our own scenes. After scraping out my sand dune and beachgrass foreground twice, I finally admitted defeat as I was attacked by dusk flies.
Jackknife Cove
Funny how this was my least favorite spot, but my best painting of the week. I have the other talented ladies I was painting with to thank for that. I arrived a little late and they had already started painting this interesting tree. I loved their compositions, so I set up along side and joined in the fun. I learned so much not only from Don, but also from my fellow students in the class.
Chatham Harbor from the causeway
I loved this causeway location. Beautiful Chatham Harbor on one side and a boat filled cove on the other. This was our last day and I was tired and cold. I loved the scraggly tree, grey branches and lush marsh grass but… my composition is boring and I got too cold to finish. I will definitely try to fix finish this – someday.
